Gynura aurantiaca- “Purple Passion Vine” or “ Purple Velvet Plant”

Light: Purple passion plants show their most vibrant coloring in bright light, but should be kept out of very hot sun. They are best kept in an eastern or northern facing window, or slightly away from a hot west or south facing window.

Water: The soil should be kept slightly moist throughout the growing season and only allowed to dry to the touch during the winter. Avoid allowing the pot to stand in water to avoid root rot.

Environment: Purple passion plants prefer high humidity, so a bathroom or kitchen can be an ideal spot if given enough light. Avoid placing it near the AC or heat source to prevent drying out. Move away from drafty windows during the winter.

Toxicity:  Reported to be non-toxic to cats and dogs

Of Note:

  • The purple passion plant was first discovered on the island of Java in Indonesia.
  • Purple passion plants usually live for only a few years, but they are easy to propagate from cuttings when they begin to decline. A good time to propagate is when the plant starts to flower.
The funky orange and yellow flowers can produce an unpleasant scent. Feel free to cut them off if the smell bothers you.
*When planting in a pot without a drainage hole, avoid over watering by estimating 25% of the container’s overall volume, with appropriate drainage materials incorporated when planting.
