Phoenix roebelenii, commonly referred to as the "Pygmy Date Palm,” is a subtropical spreading palm in the Arecaceae family. It’s a slow-growing tree with long pinnate leaves. Leaflets are arranged on a single plane. Slightly prehistoric looking.


Light: Full sun to part sun


Water: Let dry down 5% of its soil volume


Environment: Used to tropical and subtropical climates 


Toxicity: Reported to be non-toxic to cats and dogs


Habit / SIze: Typically grows about 6’ tall and 5’ wide


Of Note:

  • Prefers to be slightly root bound and does not like frequent repotting
  • When they get older they will develop sharper thorns on the trunk that should be avoided
