Alocasia, commonly called "Elephant Ear",  is a genus of rhizomatous or tuberous, broad-leaved, perennial, flowering plants from the family Araceae. Grown for their large heart or arrow shaped leaves that resemble elephant ears (thus the common name).  Prehistoric and sculptural. 

  • Light: part sun to part shade (to shade outside) depending on variety
  • Soil: moist, well drained, regular, potting soil w/ additional amendments to improve drainage such as orchid bark, perlite, peat moss, vermiculite or coco coir.
  • Humidity: high
  • Water: dry to the touch to 10% down depending on variety
  • Height at maturity: 1.5 - 6' depending on type
  • Fertilization: once or twice a month with a diluted all purpose fertilizer
  • Pro tip: Plants prefer to be slightly pot bound. Wait to transplant until roots are visible in the drainage hole at the bottom of the pot. Repot in spring when plants begin putting on new growth. They also go through a hard dormancy in winter.
